Introduction to Color in Film Preliminary Exercise: Black/White

 The objective of the lesson is to analyze color in film and how those colors show the message of the movie and how it affects the audience.   Color in film expresses emotions and tone of the overall film. Color is important to a film's audience since they can guide the audience toward the authors purpose of the film. Black and white are the colors that are going to be discussed. These colors effect a scenes mood as well, with black's connotative meaning expressing evil and fear, and white representing purity.

The goal of the preliminary exercise is to explain how color is represented through scenes in films of all genres. The media ,powerpoint, was created to execute this exercise. The powerpoint included five movies of various genres and colors such as primary, secondary, warm, and monotone, were shown in the scenes of the movie, which I will be showing the examples of the black and white in scenes. Four people worked on this powerpoint, Melanie A. Anjuel C. Valentina P. and I, Carmen M.

Conducting this exercise made me learn the effect of the usage of certain colors such as black and white colors have on scenes in film. I have learned what words are associated  with black and white. I have also learned how colors can change the meaning of a movie or a scene and how they relate to the overall genre to the film. I conducted research on the general meanings of the colors used,  the general information of the movies, and how color influences the genre of the movie.

 Camera Composition is the way elements of scene are arranged in the camera frame. Camera composition has the following elements: rule of thirds shot, symmetry balance shot, asymmetry balance shot , point shot, leading lines shot, shape shot, deep focus shot, and shallow focus shot. Rule of thirds shot is a guideline  that places your subject in the left or right thirds in the in camera framing. Symmetry balance shot is when elements are on both sides of a center line in equal weight. Asymmetry balance shot is when the shot has unequal visual weight but the frame has a sense of balance. Point shot shows where a character is looking at. Leading lines shot is where natural or human made lines lead the audience's eyes through a photograph to the subject of an image.
