Preliminary Exercise 3 B: Introduction to Genre Conventions Bubble Organizer

 Genres are categories that organize films based on their setting, theme, and characters. The genre of a film has  an importance to audiences since it makes them aware to what they are going to view whether its comedy, they will hear jokes and laughter, but if its horror, they will hear screams and view gore. Genres such as horror, comedy, and drama are what interests me when I watch movies. I love watching horror movies because I love the feeling of being shocked and not knowing what is coming next, I also love the costumes and makeup that characters typically have in horror movies they are usually all unique. Horror is a genre in film that is intended to scare, shock, and fear audiences viewing the horror film. Comedy is one of my favorite genres since comedy movies make me laugh which is really entertaining. Comedy is a genre in film that includes humor, laughter, and jokes. Drama is also a genre that I am interested in since some movies I can relate to in my actual life. Drama is a genre in film that presents fictional or non-fictional representations of a characters life or story.

My medias studies teacher assigned students in the classroom with a group to create a poster that includes mise en scene elements in genre. The poster is supposed to inform audiences on the meaning of a genre and elements that make the genre what it is. My group, Juel C., and Mel A. ,had to select a genre to pick out of horror, sci-fi, action, highschool drama, comedy, and crime. We chose the genre horror and I began to draw the title while Juel C. drew the blood drops as a banner. Mel A. researched the elements: setting, composition, acting, color, lighting, set design, costumes, and hair and makeup in the horror genre.  I began to write down all Mel A's research and putting the elements in bubbles and listing bullet points. When this was done Juel C. colored the bubbles and out lined everything with red and black marker. Throughout making the poster I learned the elements of horror in setting, color, etc. and how they all portray the genre of horror and tell the meaning of the genre or film.

 Camera Composition is the way elements of scene are arranged in the camera frame. Camera composition has the following elements: rule of thirds shot, symmetry balance shot, asymmetry balance shot , point shot, leading lines shot, shape shot, deep focus shot, and shallow focus shot. Rule of thirds shot is a guideline  that places your subject in the left or right thirds in the in camera framing. Symmetry balance shot is when elements are on both sides of a center line in equal weight. Asymmetry balance shot is when the shot has unequal visual weight but the frame has a sense of balance. Point shot shows where a character is looking at. Leading lines shot is where natural or human made lines lead the audience's eyes through a photograph to the subject of an image.
