Research Exercise Activity 3:Setting

Setting is the time or place that a narrative happens. Setting is vital in film because it expresses where and when the movie is taking place, the mood of the movie, and the genre. Setting itself contains eight elements: place, time period, time of day, cultural values, socio-economic status, mood of the scene, message in the scene, and the genre of the film. Place refers to the time or place the narrative occurs.  Time period is the year the film takes place. Time of day is the period of time in which the setting takes places. Cultural values are what shapes the society and influences  the people in that society. Socio-economic status is the measure of a individual's combined economic and social status. Mood of scene is how the viewer feels about the plot and characters. Message in the scene is the theme of what the film is portraying. Genre of the film is a category of artistic composition characterized by similarities in form, style, or subject matter.
My media teachers had us get into groups of four to conduct a powerpoint. In the powerpoint I worked with Anjuel C, Melanie A,  and Valentina P. I worked on the settings portion of the powerpoint. In which I listed the eight elements of setting and there definitions. I also presented the key definition of setting and its importance to film production. I decorated the powerpoint in the key colors of the movie: red, white, and black.

Conducting this powerpoint made me learn that there are several elements of setting and each one are important to understand setting in film. I learned each definition of the elements of setting and it made me understand film even more and what films are trying to portray.  Knowing these elements are vital to understand setting in film production.
