Preliminary Exercise:Lighting

Lighting is the quality, source, direction, and color of a light. It is essential to film because it gives the audience a sense of meaning and a visual mood. The audience is directed where to gaze by lighting. The lighting design directs the viewer's attention to a certain performer, item, or aspect of a scene.
Lighting reflects a character's mentality.

You can alter the brightness, size, color, and roughness of the light that surrounds a character to correspond with their feelings. The film's genre is defined and supported by the lighting. The most effective tool for conveying mood is lighting.Film noir, for instance, is one of the movie genres most recognized for its distinctive lighting style. Film noir is distinguished by strong contrasts between light and dark, strikingly patterned shadows, and unusual framing and composition choices.

For the audience, lighting establishes a visual tone, ambience, and feeling of purpose.
Lighting has six different techniques and the following are, frontal, side, back, under, top , and split.
Light that enters the frame from the side to emphasize a person or object is referred to as side lighting. It casts a sidelight on the performer and concentrates on the features of their face for a high-contrast look. It makes contrast, set a mood, and provide a faint fill.An actor or item is backlit from behind. It is positioned higher than the thing it is illuminating. Its purpose is to separate the background from the actor, give depth and shape, and make the frame three-dimensional.Split lighting divides the face into two equal parts, with one side acting as the highlight and the other as the shadow. Its purpose is to make a dramatic effect. A direct beam from a light source or from the sun can produce hard light, which is a harsh souring of light. Its purpose is to make highlights, shadows, harsh lines, and draw attention to the frame.Cinematographers employ soft lighting as a style to get rid of shadows and replicate delicate hues of light from outside sources. It fills light, and makes an illusion that the lighting is portrayed from natural sunlight.
